Pelican is a newly launched insurance business established to attract market leading underwriters in their sectors and offers specialised insurance products backed by Great Lakes Reinsurance (UK) PLC which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the leadingglobal reinsurer Munich Re, allowing Pelican to provide its clients with AA rated cover.

Their first market offering is a solicitors' professional indemnity insurance policy.

DAC Beachcroft has been appointed as claims handlers, to provide bespoke solutions, for all solicitors' professional indemnity claims. Pelican clients will have access to a free claims handling helpline.

Paul Cusition, Co-founder and Managing Director of Pelican, has extensive commercial insurance experience in the UK, Lloyd's and international markets. He has worked in a number of specialist insurance areas including professional indemnity and media. Paul started working in the insurance industry in 1982. He has previously held senior executive positions at Sun Alliance, Travelers, ANV and ProSight Syndicate at Lloyds.

Jay Bowey, Co-founder and Director, has been a professional indemnity specialist in the market for over 25 years, on a national and international basis. She has dealt with solicitors' professional indemnity insurance since the open market was established in 2000. Jay has previously worked at Sun Alliance, St Paul International, Travelers and ProSight Syndicate at Lloyds.

Who would benefit from this policy?

Firms who work in particular specialist areas of the law, for example; oaths, agency advocacy, arbitration, family, criminal, debt collection, employment, immigration or planning, or a combination of specialist disciplines.

And firms who have:

  • their offices and income base inside the UK;
  • partners with five years or more post-qualification experience;
  • a good disciplinary record;
  • robust management and supervisory practices and procedure in place; and
  • no on-going regulatory investigations.
